Olivia Colman on Gender Identity, Feeling “Sort of Non-Binary”

Olivia Colman is sharing her truth.

The Favourite star candidly explained why she feels so drawn to projects that include LGBTQ+ storylines, noting that she has always felt “sort of non-binary” herself.

“I think it’s a community that I love being welcomed into. I find the most loving and the most beautiful stories are from that community. And I feel really honored to be welcomed,” Olivia told Them in a story published on Feb. 5. “Throughout my whole life, I’ve had arguments with people where I’ve always felt sort of nonbinary.”

For the Heartstopper alum, those feelings were rooted in gender identity and expression as she explained, “I’ve never felt massively feminine in my being female.”

In fact, Olivia—mom to sons Hall, 19, and Finn, 21, with husband Ed Sinclair—added, “I’ve always described myself to my husband as a gay man. And he goes, ‘Yeah, I get that.’”

Though the 52-year-old joked she didn’t want those details made into “a big sort of title,” she emphasized how she feels comfortable in her own skin thanks to the people she surrounds herself with.
